Both cities are very pretty, however i felt like madrid was very compact. Whereas Barcelona, especially la rambla feels huge and very open and i love going there.

Also, compared to other well-known Spanish cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, both Valencia and Malaga stand on the bottom line, as they are very affordable.

And yes, it's relatively cheap, cheaper than Barcelona. If you are not in Málaga city but a town nearby it's way way cheaper, while you can be maybe 10 minutes away by car from the city. Both cities are good, and I am sure you'd be happy with either of them, but you will have more money in your pocket in Málaga keeping in mind you are working
Couples should spend more time in Valencia than Barcelona. You'll find plenty of romantic sights and fun activities in Valencia that are great for a weekend getaway or a longer couple's trip. Backpackers and budget travelers should spend more time in Barcelona than Valencia if your budget allows for it.
I lived in Valencia as well (US citizen) as well as a town about 1.5 hours south of Valencia called Dénia and I cannot recommend the area more. It’s definitely cheaper than Barcelona. It’s has everything but isn’t too large and the food (esp the paella is amazing.)
